I have pumpkins (Atlantic Giants) setting within 3-4 feet of main root. In order to get a pumpkin of decent size, does the pumpkin have to been “set” a minimum distance of 10 or more feet from main root? Do nutrients flow mainly from main root outward, or do nutrients also flow from end of vines back toward main root?

In most cases, growers on here would recoment that the pumpkin be grown at least 10 feet out. However there have been some whoppers grown at the 6 foot distance.

nutrients flow both ways, but the general consensus is that most comes from the stump side.

Water in the xylem goes one direction. Nutrients and stuff in the phloem can go both directions. The point of having a lot of plant before you set a pumpkin is that there's more photosynthesis action going on to make food for the pumpkin to grow. Like Vader said, most growers like that much plant to grow before a fruit starts to grow.
