I know this question has been asked before, but if you all can answer it one more time. My main is taking off and my 2 vines are going out perpendicular from the stump and main vine, and I am trying to train the other vines to go out from the main also. 2 questions, when do I start burying vines? And when can I and where do I chop the ends of the "renegade" vines off and bury them?

Pastor,
An alternative to burying is to use plastic coat hangers cut in half. Each hanger will provide you with two U shaped stakes. You will need to make sure the plastic on the inside of the stakes are smoothe. Just pin the vine at each leave node. I assume that the "renegade" vines that you refer to are secondaries...Most growers like to have at least 12 foot secondaries on each side of the plant before terminating.

so i take it secondary vines are the ones that run perpendicular to the main vine and begin at the stump.
i didnt know that, i thought secondary vines were the vines that grew off the main vine?

I thought there was some pruning strategy to secondaries, like keeping everyother one? So do I start burrying them now? I have been staking them down to train them. Thanks people for the help.

Some prune every other secondary off, and some leave most, or all on. I was thinking of pruning every other one off, but decided against it, as some secondaries didn't form, and a few are weaker growing. I start burying when they're about 3-4 ft. long. I bury up to about 6" from the secondary vine tips. I space the vines so they aren't overcrowded. I do cut out secondaries occasionally, if they seem to be crowding each other. You'll need male flowers for pollination, so don't cover those totally. Near the leaf nodes of the secondary vines, are tertiary vines. Most people pinch thes off, otherwise you could have a mess, and they may take away from the pumpkin's growth.
