My Dad used to grow reslly big (20-30 lb.) Chinese wintermelons and grew them on a wooden 'roof' structure so that the melons would hang down between the roof slats but never touch the ground. This helped them to grow big and round while avoiding contact with the soil which prevented rotting (as well as a big white area on the bottom side of the melons). My question is, would pumpkin vines, which seem very close in structure to wintermelon/watermelon/squash/cantaloupe/etc vines, be strong enough to hold a pumpkin suspended from such a structure without falling off?

i dont know but i would think they wouldn't be strong enough to hold a 500 pound pumpkin you would have to build a pretty strong wooden thing too. it may work for like a hallowen 15 pound pumpkins though.

I have a friend who has grown jack-o-lantern type pumpkins on a trellis. He makes a sling for the growing pumpkin to support it. I have thought that a leg of a pair of panty-hose might work for this, but I haven't tried it. Those must have been some strong melon vines that your dad grew!
