1. When should you cover your pumpkin with a tarp\shade?
2. I have a pumpkin that is the size of a softball and it really hasn't grown much since pollination about 1.5 weeks ago. Am I expecting too much?
3. When dead heading a vine should you cut it at a leave joint and pinch everything off at that point then bury it? And how deep should you bury?
4. When using granular fert how do you spread it around your plant? I am looking at some point to put granular potash and didn't know how to spread it.
5. How many questions do I get to ask before I become a pumpkin head?
Many Thanks in advance!!

I'll start from the last question first,
5) Two
4) Bend over and spread it around the plant.
3) Cut the end of the vine, bury it.
2) Yes and no, it may be growing slow, any other fruit set?

I'll try my best to help you.
1) I cover my pumpkins before they're pollinated, especially if the weather is hot.
2) If the pumpkin hasn't grown very much, the pollination may not have been effectve, and it may be starting to abort. After 10 or 11 days, it should be at least the size of a volleyball, with steady growth. If this isn't the case, I'd start thinking about pollinating a few more.
3) Different growers will tell you different things about burying deadheaded vines. I don't bury mine, but some do.
4) With granular fertilizer, I simply sprinkle it all around the plant. Then I make sure I give it plenty of water to help it dissolve into the ground.
5) Questions are good, keep em coming, and good luck!
Cameron.

Thanks for the quick replies! I have the Growing Pumkins II book but it really doesn't answer ALL the questions. I had a good laugh when I read Giant Veggies reply --- 4) Bend over and spread it around the plant.
