if you are getting wilting and that is why you are wanting to shade then you would do as much of the plant as possible, if you are just protecting the pumpkin then just do that

On hot summer days here I have lost many vine tips (including the main) prematurly to the stinging sun. I'm useing 30% cloth on the entire plant to see if this helps. You already have pumpkins set and are probablly pruning some vines anyway, so you may not have alot of tender growth. Lots of different ways of doing things. I would for certian shade the pumpkin, but dont bake it inside a real tight structure.
