How do you know wich direction the main vine will grow?

What if I accidentally planted it facing the wrong direction.

Just carefully train it the way you want it to go .

it happens... once it starts vining just turn the end a little each day until you got it where you want it... and its not a race take your time... you dont want it to snap.

After you turn the vine slightly during the warm part of the day, place a bamboo stick in the ground behind the vine to hold the vine in place. That way, it won't grow back the wrong way. Repeat until the vine is in the direction you want it to go. It may take a few days or so.
This is a good way to get practice if you decide later to train the vines after your pumpkin is set in the "spider pattern."
Good luck!
