When is the best time to put my young plants in the ground? This will be my first attempt. Also, do I put anything under the pumpkins as they mature to keep them off of the ground?

If you have adequate frost protection then May 1st is good here in CT. If not, then May 15th might be the best bet.

I agree with Tremor about May 1st in CT, and if not May 15th.
