My 13 year old sister in law and I bought 14 seeds from the Western Washington Fair last september and would like to try and grow a pumpkin or two in my garden this year. I have been researching and learning but I am still not sure when I should start my seeds inside and when I should transfer them outside. We know we will eventually have to limit down to one or two pumpkins just due to limited space but I want to make this a good expereince for her. Any pointers on how to do this right would be most appreciated.

Thanks

dsk,
You need to hear from a WA grower as well, but here in VT we try to get the seeds out in the first week or so in May. This means they need protection until first frost. Usually most growers will start indoors about 2 weeks before that. Like I said it may be different for your neck of the woods. Have fun it can be a wild ride.

Also My wife is wondering what I am going to do with a several hundred pound pumpkin at the end of the season. I don't know what to tell her.

DSK, here in BC we start them indoors during the last week of April and then in the ground for the first weekend in May. At that young stage they do need to be protected from the elements in some way.

Good luck, hope someone from Washinton State steps up and loads you up on local knowledge and expertise.....there are many great growers in your State.
