I've just been flipping through the seed list here on the site and am curious as to how many seeds you get out of a 1000 pound pumpkin? Or any very large pumpkin for that matter?

Depends on how many lobes there are and if they get all get pollinated thoroughly. Steve

If one has time to count every pumpkin seed, then they either have too much time on their hands......or they aren't growing enough pumpkins! <g>

I counted some of my seed stocks one time, they seemed to average about 600 seeds per fruit. A lot of the seed formation involves the genetics of the male that were used (most dont agree here, but I checked with the right people), obviously the female parent's genetics, as the fruit has a predetermined number of "eggs" before pollination. Obviously the number of lobes makes a difference, along with the soil nutrition. Then there are the pollination factors.......time of pollination, complete coverage?, temperature....yada, yada, yada......... I know that Brett Hester had over 1000 out of his 895 squash, and last year I had a wierd fruit that only had 4 seeds, with no other empty seed coats.......
The size of the fruit has nothing to do with the number of seeds a fruit has.

992 in my 534 last year...a similar ammount in an 81.5 lber on the same plant. This would lend credence to Tom's comment as the 900Lyons typically has oodles.........G

i had about 700 seeds in my 30lber last year. I think that proves the fact that the number of seeds doesn't depend on the size of the fruit. Tom
