Owen, The bamboo sticks are actually supporting the vine up! they start to go over before they lay down. You gently drop your X flatter and flatter until the vine settles without a catastrophic split.across the vine. The x also stabilizes the vine from jumping around in the wind before the tendrils and roots dig in. You see people talk about plastic hangers for traing a vine also. Used much the same way even if it's laying down the new growth tries to get up in the sun where the big leaves have already blocked. guide the the same way sometimes supporting sometimes holding it down. You'll see you'll know when the vine is stressing under weight.

Owen, When you planted from the peat pot the plant was vertical. It wants to be horizontal, You been feeding it and taking care of it so the growth is far from being in the wild with weeds etc, You have to make the soft landing come. As soon as any leaning is shown get in there, A good wind or rain will push it over, Also wind blocks around it to stop the windmilling or whipping around as described before. A fence with plastic on it will do. Let it down gently get it pointing the way you would like to go get the tendrils and new roots to dig in. and you thought all ya had to do was throw in a seed!!
