I am loving the pics of the huge 'kins' at the scales. I have noticed that some have a great shine to them. Are growers shining them up, or is that high pro glow natural?

Matt. From what i have read on these message boards some Growers use an oil, Olive or Sunflower i think, to give more depth of colour and a shine to the Pumpkins. However, i would not like to be one of the lifting crew who had to handle such Pumpkins as they must be really slippery even if all residue of Oil's were wiped off. I guess it's good as an after Weigh-Off 'Show N Shine' treatment though.

If you oil them...you must give them a good bath before weigh off. We use a marine wax once the weigh off is done. It has something in it to prevent mold and mildew.

Shining them up makes them dangerous to handle. Some weigh off rules prohibit and additive that makes them slippery.

Neem Oil sprayed on and wiped off will be absorbed within a few days. I put a squirt in a bucket and fill with water. An old towel makes a nice pumpkin wash rag.

It is nice to water spray the bottom in the loading process.
The handlers will appreciate a clean but not slippery fruit.

the best pumpkin I have so far is a massive 35 pounds. I should be able to cart it to the front porch and clean it up no problem. Thanks for the info guys!
