For all of us who are in the beginning stages of this. After reading about keeping females cool prior to opening during a heat wave by placing a gallon jug of frozen water next to the female, i gave it a try. So today i did just that on 2 new females while we are beginning another heat wave here in the midwest. 7am they were placed, i figured they would be melted by 830am. I came home from work at 5:30pm and noticed there was still a baseball sized chunk of ice in the gallon of water. Big suprise to me! I thought i was wasting my time since i couldnt check it hourly.. The only other thing i used was a styrofoam cooler placed over the top of the jug and the female (the other i used a white cloth since i havent gotten another styrofoam cooler. So definately try this if you are having heat issues.

Question, How long should i keep a female "cooled" after a pollination attempt? Looks like i am going to have one of my females open tomorrow morning. It looks better than any others is have seen so far so i am encouraged. Our current heat wave isn't forcast to end until Wed (today is Sat) so i was planning on trying to keep it cool until at least then. Is that a good idea? Any ideas? Matt, Yes our heat wave isn't near the temps you have had in California (we are "only" forecast to maybe hit 100 before it ends). The humidity is what really sucks the life out of you.
