Way ahead of myself but...

I live within 45 minutes of Half Moon Bay and would like to participate. I really just want to hang out and learn from the "pros" and actually have an official weight under my belt. Am I just wasting peoples time if I bring a pumpkin that OTT is say 500lbs? Would be a ton of fun and a kick for the kids to see Dad up there. I would hate to be looked upon as a delay and PIA to the rest of the field.

Haven't actually gone during the weigh off before, just gone after the fact for the main festival afterwards. I could go to a smaller event, but not sure of any others in the San Francisco Bay Area.

I agree...as a GPC weigh-off cofounder I can assure you that nothing is too small. We weighed official entry Squash & Pumpkins from 170-1081 lbs last year. I would gladly put even smaller entries on the scale. More entries is better. Pounds are less important than participation especially since there is only one first place. It would be a pretty dull party if only the grower of the heaviest fruit showed up.

I'm happy to say that I have taken a 621 and a 525 to Half Moon for the experience and it was a blast! Saw pumpkins from jack-o-lantern size up to vw bug size. When mine was weighed at the time I was in first place,,,woo-hoo, but of course that didnt last long.lol. Go,go,go! They put on a great meal and treat you excellent, regardless of your entries size.

Great! That is what I figured and was hoping. I have a neighbor who grows 'em too (got me hooked). I think his was 300lb estimate last year. Garysand and DuffBeer and whoever else, lets post another message closer to the weigh off and make sure we all meet and greet. Good luck and grow em big, I am right behind you...LOL.

bring your pumpkin! I decided my first year that my pumpkin was too small (< 50lbs). That was a mistake! My second year I brought 208. That was the best decision I made! I met the winners, got to meet them, talk about pumpkins, soil, etc.. and carving. I learned about a million things in one half hour! Our weigh-off is during a pumpkin farm and the farm has activities for the kids. All in all, it's about the fun, not the weight.

Last year, Riley and I took our AG (409lbs) to the Half Moon Bay Weigh Off for the first time. It was tons of fun and we met other really nice growers and learned lots. I think the smallest pumpkin weighed was a 40lb field pumpkin. It's so much fun to participate and anything size pumpkin goes. It's nice seeing many of the amazing growers whos names you know like- LaRue, Holland, and many more. I think what image from the Weigh off that is most vivid in my mind is the long lines of huge pumpkin in the beds of all those growers trucks as the sun is just rising and it's getting light!

Not to mention the collectible bottle of wine they give the entrants. Petman and others, hope to see you there.

Come to Elk Grove. It is small but lots of fun and an official weigh off site. Then go can go to Halfmoon Bay in a couple of weeks.
