I am impatiently waiting to polinate the first pumpkin and I have had 2 female flowers stop growing PRIOR to the flower opening. They look good for a few days, then shrivel an die. What the heck?

Here is your problem... it's to HOT for them. try shading and or misting them.

thanks for the weather forecast... I had almost forgotten that I live on the surface of the sun. Sad thing is that the females that have died have been in full shade under the leaves of the plants.

I will see what I can do on getting more shade. I also augmented the dripsystem so that the ground near the next set of females is moist all the time. Maybe that will help.

It is not necessarily direct sun on the small female fruit, but rather just being in the extreme heat can do it.

Shade the tip of your main. When a female appears, keep it in the shade. Your females are cooking before they open.
