My pumpkin has far out exceeded it's space in the garden and is growing onto a concrete pad adjacent to the garden. I decided to set a female on the concrete pad but now I have these secondarys that are starting to grow onto my sidewalk. This is a problem because I have a lot of traffic that comes thru my yard. What can I do after cutting the secondary vines if anything? I usually cut them and then dead head them in the garden. Any responses are welcome and appreciated

I have a similar problem with secondaries in one of my plots(pic in diary).Lots of trimming end of July on.Even though no root contribution I find the extra leaves help.Have had a 400lb on 8x12 ft.The secondary tips seem to seal themselves in a couple of days.

O2Lunch,
Pictures would help.
If you're worried about treating the cut vines I don't bother any more. I simply let them air dry. But some growers (especially those who battle fusarium & rhizoctonia diseases) will dust the cut ends with Captan. They should also be disinfecting their pruners in a 10% bleach/water solution between cuts to prevent spreading disease.
Pumpkin on concrete huh? That fruit needs a well draining, movable cushion to grow on. Setting a "pad" on a thin layer of sand will allow you to slide the pumpkin a little to alleviate vine stress if needed later.
By "pad" I'm thinking of a peice of pulp mill fabric on top of an upside down carpet remnant on top of a generous layer of builders sand. An empty poly-woven feed or seed bag would work instead of pulp mill fabric.

Lunch,
Here is the Gallery Page:
http://www.bigpumpkins.com/gallery/
Click the wizard guy in the upper right corner & the rest is pretty simple. Just follow the prompts. After a photoscreener has reviewed the image it wil show up as "new" on the homepage. After that you will always be able to locate your own gallery page where you can post pumpkin related images.
