I've been reading through posts and it looks like a dull yellow is a sure sign of abortion after the fruit has been pollinated... Does this also apply to the female before pollination? I have a female which looks like it could be my first bloom but the color looks like a dull yellow, I just wanted to know if the shine comes only after pollination??

usually says shiny..maybe a little dirt splatter..blossom will start to shrivel and show no growth if it's already given up the ghost.

With all the rain of late, lot's of growers are losing females before they can open. It is unfortunate & just one of the many challenges we all face.

Thanks for the help. Hopefully with some dryer weather I can get some fruit! I staggered my planting and have a couple plants that haven't produced any females yet, hopefully I'll get lucky...

Does anyone "treat" the skin of the new pumpkins with anything?
