I've read alot of posts about split stems and laying down the main vine/stem. Are you supposed to tie the stem to a stake like you do with tomatoes when it grows too high or do they usually just lay down on their own and you hope for the best?

frigg,

Most of the problems you have been seeing posts on occurs when the young plant starts vining, and instead of growing along the ground, shoots up into the air. With the weight of the new vine, and any high winds, this can cause vine catastrophe(twists, tears, splits, and breaks). Place 2 sticks in the ground in the form of an "X" so that the new vine rests on the crotch of the X. This will support the weight of the vine. Also helps to mound up soil around plant. As the vine grows, you can move the X away from the plant, and the vine will eventually lay on the ground. Then remove any supports you may have.
