Frank, on the secondaries at every leaf node you will see a tendril, a flower and a little leaf like growth, that little growth will turn into third vines, pinch it off.

I Uhook the plants to the ground so every tendril is wasted growth..take em off as soon as ya can..If your pruning secondaries pinch em whenever you feel comfortable..the earlier the better if you don't want em...less outside growth will push the main...just remember early secondary pruning is risky if the main snaps...GrowEmBig! For the plant........does the plant's wound repair take more or less energy than completing the growth of the tendril? Is the open cut's access for fungus, bacteria, etc a fair trade-off for any energy saved in not completing the growth of that tendril (its likely half grown when you pinch it right?)?.Does the plant activate a defence system when danaged by pruning and does this energy spent or change in priorities by the plant take from the growth of the plant/fruit? I know I smell pkn juices when I prune...do rabbitts? Deer? Woodchucks.. salivate like we do when we get a wiff of Brent Richie's southern barbeque? Is a wound's smell an attraction for pests and bring down pests that would just be flying over?......G

When tendrils leave my vines they are as small as...well never mind... seriously I fingernail them off when very small...quick dust with captan with my ever present ketchup bottle (from the local diner)...no where near half grown...closer to 1" in length and still curled up next to the vine, than full grown length of 10" or more. Don't have 4 legged critter problems in my patch, so I will not comment on the aroma of pkn juices attracting problems!!! LOL Peace, Wayne
