Do to the size of my patch about 15X15 growing space. I have to use a modified Flag to get main vine length. Just read in a general discussion post that every othe secondary should be removed. Since I will only be growing secondaries out the left side for 15-17 feet and pinching all the right side ones should I leave all the left side secondaries on. If anyone knows of a place to read up on small Patch work I'd appreciate it if wou would post it here. Alot of the first timers don't realize how much space is required and will need help now before they did what I did last year and overgrew the patch. Lost half the season by ripping half of it out. Thanks Chuck

Lobsta that's the problem..gonna prove this year that you can grow a 300 lb pumpkin in 225 sq ft. Even when I get the big patch in will need the practice this year. But I need some info on the modified flag growing pattern and proper care. Almost everybody has enough space for the christmas tree....sigh...but me!!! but I got me one of these new used tennessee hoe!!! making a deal for a three legged tractor too. and a bowl of soup...rather have the bisque!!!

Leave all the secondaries on the left side. Don't cut them off. Just the right side.

I grew 2 plants in 80sq ft last year (thats 40sq ft per plant) I got a 191 lbs and 145lbs. This year with better seeds and better soil and 1 plant per 80 sq ft I honestly believe 500 lbs is attainable out of 80 sq ft . If you aint got hope you aint got nothin.

Small Patch Thats incredible. what kind of prunimg did you do. I know I used to much nitrogen last year but the vine took over the entire garden, up all the fences at the end of the season I couldn't get in it. I couldn't set fruit either. This year no nitrogen unless it stands up and begs. I hope your right. I was figuring 1lb a square foot. since the big growers get 1.5 or so.

I just let the vines grow to the edge of the patch (which isn't far) and then pinch them off and bury them. Nothing I do is to high tech.

Just so you know, last year was my first ever, My total square foot growing area was about 150 ft mostly ice plant. My dirt was in a 1.5 foot by 10 foot planter box. My pumpkin got 250 lbs and would have been larger, but powery mildew killed it. It was a great pumpkin, perfect shape and very orange grown from a 357 Mongeon. I think a large pumpkin can grow in small spaces too., Jim
