Hello snikpump & welcome!
As a rule, competition plants are started indoors the last week of April for a planting outside target of the first few days in May. This does NOT insure a frost free grow-in. So competitive growers will also erect a plastic covered cloche (mini greenhouse) to protect the seedling from frost.
Casual backyard growers may instead choose to delay starting by a couple weeks. The plants can still yield GIANT pumpkins (with the right seed stock) by most standards since they will quickly catch up in the warmer soil.
I have friends in Spring Vally & Nyack. You anywhere near there?
