Why are some seeds smooth and brownish in color while others are rougher and more whiteish in color? Does it affect the way the plant will grow or pumpkins will turn out?

It's been suggested occasionally in the past that more orange pumpkins come from white seeds. If there was/is any base to that, it's just because a major good color ancestor had white seeds, and that trait got passed along with the orange. As to why, If you had a camera in the pumpkin as it grew, the tan seeds would be white earlier in their growth. The coat is just a little less developed. It doesn't bother the growing part though. Actually, white seeds (having thinner shells) germinate a tiny bit faster. Seed color, like anything else, is often passed on through the generations. AleX Noel.
