Seed naming ethics? How is it done? When you plant a seed and grow a new pumpkin do you get to name the seed? Or is this only when it is crossed with another seed etc? Are names of the grower always used? Or can use whatever name you want. Obviously, a person could name any seed they wanted, but I just want to know the common ethical practice of naming new AG seeds. Is there any name change or catagory for organic or genetically modified AG pumpkin seeds?

You take your last name & then the weight of the pumpkin. I grew a 384 lbr this year & therefore the seed is 384 Huffer. .......Paul Huffer

I do not believe anyone has genetically modified a giant pumpkin seed, and organic are named the same as conventional grown. The year is also included into the mix as some growers have grown pumpkins that weigh the same in different years. 845 Bobier is the one that come to mind the quickest. Joel Holland has also grown a couple that weighed the same. Shannon

Shannon I am pleased you pointed out the issue about the year the Pumpkin was grown, as you say same Grower could and has grown same weight Pumpkins or Squash in different years. I have a very very poor memory capacity and trying to remember the years of certain Pumpkins/Squash/Seeds is a nightmare. Even if the weight is not replicated by the same grower i think it is essential to put the year the Pumpkin/Squash was grown as a matter of course. Now where did i put all those 1225 Jutras & 845 Bobier Seeds !! LOL

Also, the cross. My 720.6 was grown from the 1068 Wallace seed and was pollinated with a flower from an 1104.5 Hester seed. The cross is 1068 X 1104.5 (Female X Male). Squashes either have a * or Sq. written on the package. AleX Noel.

Alex You state a very good point there about identifying the Squash by either an asterix or Sq, too many times it is taken for granted that everyone should know, and worse still remember, what the 'famous' producers are. Without looking at notes i could still not type here the year that the 1097.5 Beachy was grown. Buy hey, i guess that's my problem.
