I've heard most of the champion growers starting as early as possible to get the pumpkins as big as possible. When would I plant to get a 500 pd halloween pumpkin?

A lot of the big pumpkins have been set around mid July which means they were planted in early May. I planted last year on May 7 and got fruit set around July 10th. It reached about 450 lbs by August 20th before it split. If it hadn't split it was on it's way to 750-800.
Considering that these pumpkins routinely grow 10 to 30 lbs a day once they get going it only takes a certain amount of time. I've also read that they only grow for a certain number of days anyway and then they stop. IF that's true it doesn't matter how early you plant as long as you leave yourself about 70 to 90 growing days for the pumpkin.
