what is the dill ring that people talk about on their atlantic giant pumpkins? & what causes it?

A dill ring looks like the valley spaces inbetween the pumpkin ribs. The ring runs around the entire pumpkin from side to side, unlike the rib valley that runs from stem to blossum end. The dill ring is an area of weakness and is generally where splits occur, esspecially the very devastating ones. Don't know what causes it, but it could be some kind of deformity or related to genetics. I had 3 of them on my pumpkin this year that took it down. Somebody will have a picture.
