Hi everybody! This is my first post, although I've been reading yours for months. I just had to share my exciting news with people that could understand my enthusiasm! This is only my 2nd year growing pupmkins, and this year I grew Big Max as well as some pretty cool Fairy Tales. I have to admit that I was sceptical that Big Max would get as big as the seed package said since I'm growing in the heat of Texas, but my Big Kahuna was a whopping 90 lbs! I'm SOOOOO excited! Several others around the 70-80 lb mark. We are gonna have some SWEET jack-o-lanterns this year! And we have a ton of Fairy Tales. They are so much fun. While I was searching for all the info I could find on pumkins this summer, I fell in love with the idea of growing Atlantic Giants next year. I'm so hooked, and I haven't even gotten to grow one yet! I've read Growing World Class Giant Pumkins II a couple of times and am absorbing all the info I can from online. The funny thing is that we just moved to Texas from Seattle a year ago. Too bad I didn't catch the giant pumkin bug while we lived there, huh! My current obsession is researching which seed that I want to use for my adventure next year. I have many favorites in mind that I've seen on the P&P Seed website (what a FABULOUS place to go!!), but I'm torn! There are such amazing pumkins there with such amazing family trees, but will they grow well here in my Texas heat?? I'm going to continue researching but wondered if anyone here had a suggestion for seed that will do well in this heat?
Thanks! Jessica

Jessica, Congats on the Big Max!! I grew them last year and had alot of fun too. If you want some seeds for next year, go out and get yourself some of those small bubble mailers. There are lots of growers here who will give you some seeds to get started with next year. Just shoot me an email with your address, and I will give you some of mine from this year, just for sending me a bubble mailer with your address and some postage on it. There are lots of others here who like to do the same. Keep watching, cause after weighoffs, there will be ALOT of seeds to be had. Your hardest decision next year will be deciding which ones to grow. mike

Thanks so much! And thank you Mike for the generous offer. I'll be taking you up on that. I'm currently preparing my beds for next year. My neighbor thinks I'm crazy for being so excited about collecting his old rotting haw and cow manure. Heeeheee!!

Haul that poop my friend....A couple of inches deep over the whole patch is fine for a two or three year building program. Got leaves???? Till 'em in too. Then plant a cover crop good for your area. We use winter rye.
