Beach Park, IL.

Hello,

I am fairly new here. I love to grow pumpkins, and last year grew my first Atlantic Giant successfully, with a 132 lb. pumpkin to start. That was from one of Howard Dill's 400-600 lb. seeds. Next year I want to grow them again, but I want to get into something bigger, like the crosses. I know a lot of you probably have more experience in genetics then me. I would like a cross/strain that grows huge pumpkins, but also one that tends to throw the more good looking orange, round types -- for fun and show. What types of seed/strain should I look for? Where is a good place to get seed, and when is a good time of year to get them?

Thanks!!

You can start by checking the AGGC website to get some ideas about weight. For looks, why don't you look around at some other growers's diaries on this site. Pick out growers who are growing what you're looking for. Then shoot them an email and tell them how impressive the work they have done is. Make sure they know you are serious- they won't want to give their seed away only for you to waste it. Most of the people I have contacted have been very nice. FYI- my 1st year wasn't great. You already have better seed than I had this past season! Also, you can buy the proven strains but they are rediculously expensive. Good luck!

Almost anything with the 801.5 Stelts, 846 Calai, 869.5 Calai in its parentage will throw you big and orange. Alot of growers out there still breed big and orange. Stay tuned for the Fall trading season. For the simple cost of 2 1st class stamps, a bubble pack, and a kind note you can get more seeds than you will ever plant.

Take a look at my diary.I think I will have some good seeds to offer. Just send me an email and I will give my address. If you check back here during the winter months in the seed exchange message board you will find lots of seeds for just the price of a bubble envelope and a stamp. Good luck next season and grow em big! Steve
