On one of my AG plants, the vine is swelling and bursting, secreting a brown thick goo. Also, at the base of several leaves I'm seeing a similar yellowish-brownish color and the vine seems to be bursting. Any answers? Suggestions? I'd post a pic here, but wouldn't know how to link to it.

Picture are easy to submit. OK When you open up someone elses diary entry. You will see a link in the upper right hand corner that says submit to your own diary. Then you will be brought to a submission page. Now you have to hit the browse button and find the picture you want to enter. Write a caption below it and press enter. Then the picture goes through an approver and they post it.

Did all the fruit abort on the plant in the vicinity of the problem spot?....are the imediate leaves wilting and brown/yellow?...and is this vine area a whole lot larger than the normal vines?, kinda corky and pale looking vine?

The vine has one fruit that still continues to grow and look healthy. Other than the problem spots, the vine looks perfectly normal. However, the leaves wilt quickly without water, while my other plants look fine. I'll have to start a diary and get my pics on there...

Well, I just pulled three plants at the farm due to what I described...probably didn't need to pull the whole plant because as I was pulling I was seeing normal vines 4 feet from the main problem area, just all the fruits aborted.

Surgery, eh? What should I do? Not root rot either, huh?

is what it looks like when the borer gets in and starts to feed. the entry hole is on the opposite side of the vine from where you were taking the pic. in the pic after it i can see seceral other likely entry sites by the brown discoloration on the vines.
i have used a pocket knife or exacto knife before. you'll want to either gently dig into the entry hole (some may not travel too far), or slice with the grain of the vine to open it up to find them.
this does not rule out the possibility of having root rot also.
next year, focus on prevention. it's a lot easier if they don't get a chance to get in in the first place.
good luck!

This could be Borers...but....it could be other stuff too.
Brown thick goo could also be Gummy Stem Blight.
A White Foaming ooze can be Sclerotinia (White Mold) which has been seen in Ohio this year.
Can we see some pictures?

Check my diary - I posted three pics on there recently. If you need to see something else, let me know and I'll get some more pics up.

Just performed some surgery - all i'm finding inside the vines is a cavity with little potato bugs scampering around. There are a bunch of tiny brown things - SVB eggs??
