I know that burying the vines at leaf nodes (piling soil on top of the nodes) will lead to root production at the nodes. If the nodes are just laying on loosely compacted soil will roots form without adding soil on top of the nodes? So far they haven't here yet.

Y'all were right. I checked last night after I removed the row cover and all the nodes that were laying on top of loosely compacted soil had rooted, some quite substantially.
