Miss Shannon

Cherry Valley Boro, PA

I am a first year pumpkin grower and had my first crisis today. I didnt know growing giant vegtables could be so emotional. I am growing a 1074 Brunst and thought i was doing a good job until i had the stump split. Then came a lot of ooozze. It didnt look will at all and then my females sborted before the flower even opened. The stump has since been removed and i am now relying on the roots. I still hoping for some FRUIT. If anyone has any ideas on how to keep the plant triving i will take all the advise i can get...1st year jitters Please Help

What you see is beneficial fungi. What it was actually doing was trying to clean up root rot which can be caused by several things. Possible cause....heavy rain, oxygen deprivation, from the water, and hot weather.

If you have a good plant set with covered vines you will get something. You might even be most pleased with what you may get.

Bury ALL your vines and keep the soil moist, probably wouldn't hurt to foilary spray some Miracle grow in the evening cuz it sounds like you could use some miracles about now!

P.s Stump Split? Were you water/fertilizing alot??

when you say bury all the vines, you do mean just where the roots come out of the stem? I am also a rookie and need counseling. I agree with Miss Shannon. I feel that I should sleep with my plants in order to protect them. my suzy

I am a nu-b also but what I think doc an gad's mean is use soft nice soil/compost mix to cover all your vines. Some people cover only the leaf axles (where the leaf and vine meet) But, some cover the entire vine. Some people will carefully make a trench, let the vine grow into it, and cover it up. Last year I did something that I thought would end my season. I cut one of the secondaries with a shovel. It kept growing though and produced a small pumpkin... If your plant is huge who knows what you might get?
Don't give up yet. Also you can use some root growth fert and/or root enzyme at the leaf axles?

The best to you!
