I am a Southern grower and have had Scimitar and Merit suggested as vine borer preventatives. I have been using Sevin, but I am beyond stressed that it isn't working because 2 squash plants have already been attacked. Please advise. mysuzy

I couldnt control SVBs with Sevin. I think you should switch to something else. Triazicide works well for me.

I used Bug Be Gon (permethrin) alternated every so often with Sevin and malathion last year, and no borers. I still had cucumber beetle problems.

Merit works great. I used granular when I planted then added it to compost when I buried the vines. I've had minimal cuc beetles and I haven't seen any SVB to date. I have loads of earthworms and toads in my patch. That is the only chemical I've used for bugs to date.

Last year I lost my main vine to SVB's. I applied Merit in the 1st week of June and Talstar sprayed on the vines and leaf stalks every 10 days. So far no problems like last year.
