Ha ha....I just started pruning the basal crown. LOL. It might not matter much but I have this mental image of the plant needing the extra photosynthate early when the vine is less than 8' long.

Topsfield, Ma.

Why prune any leaves around the stump if they're not damaged?

Air circulation & it's easier to see what's going on.

A Stump is something that is cut off....lol We had a huge debate and came up with Basal Crown...Obviously you did not get the memo. Please update your vocabulary page now.

I would trim off all the small leaves, and little females, and all the curly stuff that grow on the stump. (As soon as it starts to shade it), and big leaves if you have too! What your trying to do is keep it dry, and allow air circulation, and let the sun bead right on it. Too try and prevent stump rot. So in my opinion when ever you can't keep it dry there is no set time you will know, just by observation. Take care Rog. Grow'em big K

Now if the plant has run & has sufficient leaf area elsewhere to support growth. This appears to be the case judging from your diary entries.

It will be alright dont underestimate the growth of a AG. I really should have done mine earlier at the time when I did mine they were already turning yellow, and soft It was almost to late, and I have to do it again already, but this time they are dry and green

Hey wait a minute I just ran outside I have a small plant that has only 24inc main, and there is nothing to trim. So if you had to hack, Like they say here in the south it'el be alright! You had me worried just for a second. So I double checked. Rog.

It dosen't matter if you hack off all the foilage at the "stump" if you are constantly watering it and have driven out all the oxygen it will become anerobic and start the big decline. Better to keep the stump area moist, aireated, shaded and well tended in my humble opinion than bald, compacted, and sun scalded...
