below is from doc, on another post, seems like a bunch of what you were asking...
In addition, I am growing jack-o-lanterns, and when the females get big enough they just fall over to the side, without any coaxing
Good luck curvy and sister

Do both and a third one too if you should be so lucky. Make your choice decision in about a week when they are approaching basketball.
At this point I like to start thinking position, on the vine. Choose one that will grow, on the outside, of a curve as close, to ninety degrees off the vine as you can from what choices you have. Then free the vine by cutting the roots. Move the vine, in a curve, away from the shoulders, of the pumpkin. You can move the pumpkin too but moving the vine is a whole bunch safer. Don't move either much per day. A half inch is enough if you do that daily, to curve that vine away, from the pumpkin. The vine roots need to be cut free so that it can rise as your pumpkin grows. Think at least two feet, on each side, of the fruit. That vine has, to rise, freely as the pumpkin grows.
And...surely get two inches, of sand, in position, for the fruit, to lay on. You may wish, to place a synthetic block, on top of the sand. The least expensive is a synthetic material feed bag cut open.

Let the baby alone for a few days it will swell if it took the polination, I like to leave the leafe stalk at the fruit/leafe axil on untill the pumpkin lays down and gets about baseball size, (shades it) also lay some playsand under the pumpkin "landing zone" to keep the dirt and crud off it, rember they the smallest scratch on it at this stage will result in a huge scar/deformity as it grows! Cool and keep asking questions,. P.s what did you pollonate it with? Did you secure the pollination to exclude cross contamination??

i have all open pollinated seed plants so there are no genitics i just picked the best growers as the ones in which to use for pollination on the females. I have one plant thats larger then all the others at about 17 feet now and i self pollinatied the female this morning and used its males the other day to pollinate on another plant i know it seems silly to do this since there mutts but for me its fun and i like to get practice for next yr when i do have good genetics lol have a good yr thanks for the help

Just let them ride for a while, you'll know if the pollination took. I don't try to do any positioning of the pumpkin 'till it gets to be volleyball size or more because they just roll back to where they were. Make small moves preferrably in the afternoon when the stem is warm and not so likely to snap. Sounds like you're doing pretty well so far, keep 'em going.

If growing too straight up, some support and easing it down might be prudent. As a newbie I am still learning, but, I had a 'kin pollinated on a 1075 Daletas plant that on day 4 after pollination "laid down" and snapped its own stem clean off. It was growing straight up from main vine, and directly over the main. Another lesson learned. Luckily I have a flower zoo going with numerous males and females on all plants. Peace Wayne
