New grower curious if it is common for the first female flower to not mature. First female on my 906 Tanner never did mature...out about 8'...and is shriveling up. Is this common or am I lacking something in the soil. Second female is already looking better than the first one. Could cool nights...low to mid 40's...have doomed the first one. Thanks for all info. Peace Wayne

Could be early...They only have a short time for pollination if it didn't happen....you must have been sleeping, get out there the next time one is gonna open and make sure it's done...GrowEmBig! Chuck

Why in the world would one want to pollinate a pumpkin in mid-May?

To have a mature fruit for State Fair in early August. The first female shriveled up before the flower ever opened.

let it grow some more green, nip off the first couple of females except one. Get outdoor hp sodium lights and mess with the photo period,,get a expert to tell you how long.. I have pushed some tomato plants to bear early,,but not AGs.

My pumpkins grow for 80-90 days at best. A Fair in early August? Tell them to move the dates for their Fair! ;>)

Second female flower on main out about 11' and seems to be maturing...guessing it should open within 2 or 3 days...already 2 or 3 times bigger fruit under flower than first one...keeping fingers crossed. Stan...this is a State Fair and like anything connected with the State...you can't tell them jokers anything. LOL Peace Wayne

Owensboro, Hi, The same exact thing happend to me. I am not sure why but the first female flower didnt mature and just died for some reason. New females have now grown and have been pollinated and fruit has set. Perhaps it was just to early before.
