hi there new to hobby was wandereing how to prevent root rot or stem rot in the future thanks ryan???

Well, I have had this plenty. Clear all leaves from the stump. Allow for good air circulation. If rot is spotted cut it out with blade quickly and add sulfer to the area. I have try to treat area with sulfer but the rot just spreads. Last year I cut out a section of the vine bigger than a quarter and that saved the plant.

I've had the problem for a few years usually losing my root system come mid-august, as already stated you need good air circulation, your soil should not remain damp, the pumpkin leaves tend to shade the ground and prevent the soil from drying out, sub soil watering is better than overhead watering, also adding organics such as manure over the years will make you soil more prone to holding water and not draining as well, i add sand to my garden and to the raised beds i grow my plants in, as a result of these practices i had no root rot last year, good pruning helps as well. good luck Glenn

This thread is starting to sound like Fusarium. Thiophanate-methyl (Cleary's 3336 or Topsin) is the fungicide of choice.
