I'm using grow lights for the first time this year and got great advice from some very experienced growers. Have a look at http://www.bigpumpkins.com/msgboard/ViewThread.asp?b=3&p=114834

I have been using the same 4 foot lights for years now. Once the seed breaks the soil I put the light about one inch above it and leave it on 24/7. As the plant grows I raise the light. You only want the plants in a pot for a week or so anyways so once its open and the first true leaf is seen get it outside. If you follow these rules you wont have time to get the plant leggy. As a side note I have never burned the leaves either by this method.

I leave my light on for 16 hours off for 8 whenever possible. I noticed the seedlings grew the most in the dark.
