I bought heating cables and now need to know how deep to put them and when it is warm enough to not need them anymore, how do you get them out without hurting the plant or plants? You can tell I am doing this for the first time.

I dig about 6 inches down in my planting area and place the cables in. But first I make a small frame about 4 x 4 out of 1/2 PVC and weave the cables back and forth across the frame spacing about 3 to four inches in between. On one end I put a 3 foot piece of PVC rising straight up and out of the ground, this is where my plug end comes out of the dirt and gets connected to the extension cord for power. Then I place a one litter bottle over this piece of PVC to protect it from the elements. I dont take them out till the end of the season. Leave them in for warmth in Sept. Dig 'em up and put 'em away till next year.
