Peace, Wayne

I read on a different thread, a post by Alexsdad, that talked about the importance of "clearing the stump". He said he learned it in Niagara, and I know...what happens in Niagara, stays in Niagara...LOL, but any details would be appreciated. Peace Wayne

Wayne, here is a link to an excellent picture of a clear stump area:

I bet that just looking at the picture you will get the idea.

The whole idea is to provide good air circulation to that area so as to reduce the probability of stump rot.

Good question as I have had stump rot many times over the years. Nothing such as sulfer was able to save them. The only thing that has worked is finding rot early and cutting it out. I saved one of my plants that way last year.Early detection is a must.

I guess constant sun will not hurt them? I might try this method and see what happens.

I keep them free of mulch, weeds and anything else that keeps the sun from beating down on them. Never had any stump issues. Let the sun at 'em, and they will start to look ike a small tree trunk with bark.

Never had a problem myself but for those who do have problems maybe you want to consider Dwaine's umbrella method....

Don't know where I gathered up the umbrella idea. The first year I had some rot. Packed it with captan and set up clear small tent shield to keep it light, airy and dry.
That ended the problem. Last year I used the umbrella to keep it dry. Remember we had a very wet early season. Later in the drier period I pulled the covers for sunlight and dry air.

I think I may be mimicing stem split management. Basics...lots of air and keep 'em dry.

Sorry Wayne, I hae had others email as to that remmark on cleaning off the stump..My point was after seeing all these other patches even though you see them growing things don't always click in your head...I was allowing second growth leaves to reestablish on the stump so they were always covered....more leaves the better was my thinking but this is also the area were my PM started...after a brief discussion with Alan he said pinch it off, get the stumps air and I'd be better off...That is what I'll do.
