I'm new to everything (the list & growing pumpkins). When is the best time to start growing a pumpkin in Southern California? I will have many more questions so please be patient with me. I was thinking of starting with a "Atlantic Giant". Any comments are welcome.

Welcome to this insane Hobby..There are a bunch of SoCal Growers my advice would be to hook up with one of them for like a mentoring/growing partner. Most of the SoCal people have plants in the ground already.

nicki1 i live in simi valley ca , most of us around here start seeds aprox april 28 up till may 10 th , im starting the 28 of april anyone can pretty easly grow a 200 to 500 lb pumpkin but to grow bigger takes work ! you can get great seeds free from many people on big pumpkins,ill send some if you want! my 2nd real yr growing i got a 872 lber ,much to learn to grow a big one but thats what makes fun ! good luck glenn !

San Diego, CA

Hi! I'm in San Diego county, & am growing AGs for the 1st time too - have grown other maxima type pumpkins before, so have some practice. Haven't planted yet (April 24), but plan to start in the next week. May 1st is the earliest I plant, but I'm in a mountain area with a lot of frost. There will be a pumpkin weigh-off here in El Cajon in late Sept. Contact Duster or Gourdzilla for more info.
