OK, I have belonged to BP for 3 days now and my friends growl at me when they sense I am going to start talking about growing giants.
One new question: what is a dill ring?
Would any Southern gardeners please write and help me. I know our heat, humidity is different from Northern-a lot different.

A dill ring is a sag line that goes around the pumpkin. The pumpkin flesh is much thinner at that point and has a tendency to split open at the rib area. Here is a good picture of a dill ring:

By the way, don't feel alone with the way your friends are acting. Many of us at this site understand all to well.

Welcome on board, and keep asking questions!

Hey everytime I sit outside at work for break the other guys just bust out laughing because the first thing that comes out of my mouth is pumpkin growing, well it keeps them laughing instead hearing the word like mother f..... about 100 times in 10 min break.

They may growl a little now, but wait till they see that pumpkin. I did not have but one dill ring last year. I dont now exactly where German town is , but I bet our weather is very close

I don't get growled at much (except for my wife......oh its those #$%@ pumpkins again) lol. The lady at the grocery store calls me pumpkin man now and so does the guy up at the feed mill. Heck, I even talked my boss into growin one at his house. :)

I reread your letters and I must say that you guys are a comical group. My life is getting so exciting. I received a packet of seeds from a BP grower and my neighbor nearly kissed me when I asked if she would share some of her gigantic pile of horse poop. She said she would throw her husband in with the deal, as he loved to work in the garden too and talked aboutit as much as I do.. I would take him if he had a backhoe and could scoop it up and put it out for me. She reminded me that I used to date a guy whose head was so big I called him pumpkin head. a foreteller of what was going to be my passion in 2005.
Keep writing. Y'all could be on stage.suzy

You spend too much time in that pile, and your relationships are gonna be even more strained.

Gee wizz that's what I thought pretty girls smelled like until I went to the big city high school. Ten years later I went back into the county and hitched one for a wife. By that time they had discovered elecric to pump bath water nightly. Dem city girls smelled pretty good but they did'nt know ther poop. :)

here is another story about the suzy manure piles. someone had given me a gift certificate to get a manicure. I had scrubbed my fingernails both the night before and that morning knowing what was under them. The manicurist kept saying,"I just cannot get all of this dirt out. What have you been doing?" hmmmmm

ok-i have done all everyone of you suggested. went to Sam's and got 25 lbs. of cornmeal and black strap molasses to attract worms. My husband thought i would get questions about these purchases, but, as I am a Southerner, the checkers at Sam's probably thought I was having people over for dinner and having corncakes with molasses for a topping!
Same husband thinks I have now spent about $4 per pound of whatever grows. Need a new, more garden-oriented husband. suzy
