Am I right in my calculations that this would work out to something like 2.3 litres per square foot? (not that it's normal to mix imperial and metric, but I tend to think of volumes in metric and large areas in square feet).

yes the conversion is 2.3 liters per sq. ft.
To cover a 1000 square foot garden evenly with 1 inch of water it takes 623 gallons or 2358 liters. This is 89 gallons (337 liters) per day, or 178 gallons or 674 liters every other day. That is more water than many growers might think. 1 gallon = 231 cubic inches = 3785 cubic centimeters = 3.785 liters
For 1 1/2 inches of water per week it takes 934.5 gallons (3537 liters) per week, or 133.5 gallons or 505 liters per day, or 167 gallons (632 liters) every other day.
or all in metric for 1 inch of water it is: 254 liters per sq meter or 2538 liters for 10 sq meters.
times the numbers above by 1.0764 to convert from 1000 sq ft to 10 sq meters.
the amount of water can vary greatly depending upon your soil, weather (temp. humidity, rain, etc ...), etc ...

1mm of water per 1 sq.meter is 1 liter. So, 1 inch (2,54cm) per 1sq.m are 25,4l.

Hightower, my soil is clay loam and I use 52 gals per day per plant, when it's dry. If your growing in a sandy loam soil you will need to use more. All those numbers gives me a headache......Phil

in so cal i watered in morning to cool patch but noticed that about 300 to 400 gal was about right per day in 1500 sq ft ( per day ) but i have good drainage & on hill so some is lost not that much though maybe15 % i got a 872 lb a 683 & a 672 & a 570 all plants were to small only 150 to 350 sq ft this yr 650 sq ft ea

lotsa great figuring - but if you put a tuna-fish can in the patch - when it's full via whatever method you use for watering you have put in an inch - extrapolate from there.....
for us simple folk who didn't pay attention in math class....

PRRY, you clearly paid enough attention in class to use a word like "extrapolate" :-) How would that method work for a burried drip system?
But, seriously, I have been using this conversions page a lot lately: http://www.weathernetwork.ca/inter/tools/conversion/index.htm
It does temperature, volume, area, humidity, and more.

If you are using soaker hoses how can you keep your pressure up on 2- 75' sections when using well water. Is this enough hosing for 1 plant? The water has to travel 150 yards to get to the soaker hoses.
