How long do you let the side vines grow to and do you just let the main vine keep growing and is it worth taking off male flowers that you dont need to save the plant energy. So many questions so little time!

how much room you have is the biggest factor in how big you let your plant get most growers will terminate the main vine around 30 feet and let secondaries go from 5 to 15 feet once you have several pumpkins set and you're pretty sure you have at least one in a position that is in a spot you can work with cut all flowers before they bloom

ryan, just cut off those unwanted vines with a good sharp knife if you've had problems with plant diease clean your knife before and after each cut with a 50 / 50 solution of bleach water and if you want cover the cut with an anti fungal agent i usually just bury mine with soil randy

I saw on a net page that someone closes the pruned vines with pieces of cork (like from vine bottles) and lacquer that is used to seal pruned trees. That should preserve the vine and keep insects outside.
