Hi- I'm a new grower trying to read everything. First question (one of many to come) what is mushroom soil or mushroom compost exactly? Where do most people get it? Cost? Thanks!

mushroom compost is the organic material left over after mushroom companies grow there mushrooms. i'm pretty sure they only grow "one round" of mushrooms before they discard the compost. depending on where you are it is made of different things.......some are a combination of horse manure, chicken manure and straw. others have different things in them. see if there are any mushroom farms near you, call them and ask them if they sell it. just be sure and check the PH, from what i understand it can vary greatly. good luck, scott

Thanks Scott. Now, I can't seem to find mushroom farm in the yellow pages, so if anyone from NE Ohio can tell me where they get theirs, I would greatly appreciate it! I am also looking for a source for chicken manure. The one place I found would not give it to me because of some EPA regulations about how close to dwellings the manure can be.
Thanks!

Kurt,
I believe there is a mushroom plant in Lima, Ohio. There is a guy in Wampum,Pa. that has exclusive rights to the stuff, he ships it to his place and then he sells it for $12 a yard. A tri-axle semi-dump load runs $600-$700.I'm pretty sure the source of chicken manure is a chicken! LOL! Seriously, e-mail me and I can hook you up with the mushroom stuff, I know you can also get it in Canfield, Ohio.
