Let me beat a dead horse: As soon as government starts defending wacko ideologies... thats no longer a government where liberal ideals can continue to thrive. When a government starts defending specific wacko ideologies, that is no longer a liberal government.

I see it as getting rid of a Taliban-esque dogmatism and returning the USA to a less ideologically wacko, more liberal, nation.

Its a victory for liberals too. They just may not see it, because they've ironically become so dogmatic (un-liberal). Why liberals fell down the slippery slope into various un-liberal dogmatisms, is another discussion. But I think it comes from the idea that the government needs to defend individual ideologies. And the government cant really do both, it cant both defend narrow ideologies AND defend liberty (aka freedom from) those same narrow ideologies.

We've seen narrow ideologies completely fill every sphere of our society, and maybe even our persinal lives, right...?

I dont know how it relates, but there was the guy who cut down the oldest tree in the world basically just to count the rings, then when he realized it was the oldest, he was like "Oops".
