If my soil test calls for 9 lbs elemental sulfur.. If I applied 40 lbs of gypsum, do I subtract the sulfur in the gypsum from the recommended elemental sulfur, or is the gypsum sulfur different from the elemental sulfur? Also, what about ammonium sulfate? Thanks.

It depends on your soil lab. Western usually has separate recs for sulfate sulfur and elemental. The elemental is to bring the pH down. Check out Western Labs website. They have a tutorial section on elemental sulfur.

I think sulfer can be quite high without hurting the plant steve daletas had his up around 700 ppm for his 2469. The ammonium part of ammonium sulfate would also lower your ph btw but the sulfate wouldnt. The chemistry of sulfer and sulfate is different so just add what they recommend dont swap one for the other.

Its for dropping PH so put the full nine lbs down. I'm guessing your ph is above seven. Ammonium sulfate will bring your ph down, gypsum wont.

Gypsum has the sulphur in it just to even out the pH. If there was no sulphur, the gypsum would be basic, and the sulphur counteracts that.

Thanks alot people. I kinda thought the sulfer in the gypsum was to balance out the Ca. I'll go with the whole recommended amount. Hoping to get all worked in the next couple days.
