Around here, planted commercial pumpkins are put in the ground June 10 give or take a few days. Therefore, they are ready to sell about the Last week of September. Two years ago I had ripe pumpkins in mid Augest and left them on the vine till Early Sept. Cut and stored those pumpkins in my barn till second week of Sept.

Pumpkins will be ripe when little or no green is present...Tom

Brix test is supposed to work if you just happen to have a refractometer hanging around. Make a pie & see?

Seriously though. If they're fully (or mostly) orange, you're good to go.

Howdens are supposed to be late maturing pumpkins 115 days however i grew them last year and the matured early i was worried that they would not survive to halloween, i am growing them again this year and have not had one turn orange yet, but things are a couple of weeks behind, they also seem prone to powdery mildew.
