Get little white plastic baskets and place over the females. North Shore does this and I stole the idea since I have the same problem and with chipmunks .Make sure there are holes for air.

Never seen or heard of squirrels munching on plants like bunnies. I could be wrong though.

A small live trap baited with peanut butter has always worked for me. For catching squirrels that is -- I wouldn't fit in the trap. Like Billium says, never heard of them munching on plants, but they could do damage running back and forth in your patch I suppose.

I used to use rat traps at my dads house and caught many things including birds that like PB. Many blue jays and cardinals. :( I switched to small have a heart traps after many birdies lost their lives. lol

Live traps baited with sunflower seeds works great. But the best trap I've found is the pipe trap baited with sunflower seeds. Birds leave it alone, but squirrels don't. http://www.bugspray.com/catalog/products/page1599.html

You need to use an apple with peanut butter hung by wire in the trap above the trip mechanism inside the trap.
I use the havahart trap and the squirrels learned how to jump around and steal the bait.
Good luck with it, swimming lessons are always open at my house for the squirrles,

PHOS TOXIN works great if you can get some. When the small grey tablets touch the dirt and moisture it makes cyanide gas (don't touch it and plug the hole as soon as you put it in). It keeps the squirrels cells from using oxygen and so they go to sleep...permanently.

I agree! Box traps with crunchy peanut butter. That works every time for me. I thinned out the squirrel population in or neighborhood with that combination, this year.
