When you compost something properly and there are weed seeds in it, can they still germinate in my patch? I ask because I found some compost and there are 2 prices that are aways apart, one has weed seeds in it the other doesn't.

If weed seeds are present it didnt hit 150 degrees,or was contaminated at a latter date.Proper compost has very little to o weed seed in it.

HHG, cause of the 150 temp, killed em or cause of what was in it to begin with? Just tryin to learn a lil!!! is 150 a true definition of real compost? Peace, Wayne

I paid 450$ for 50 yds in 2010.Find free compost at a farm & find somebody who likes you to truck at a reasonable fee My 450 was mostly trucking exspense.Are you a real preacher? ask your flock where to find it.They will most likely have connections.PEACE WAYNE Compost piled right will heat up to 150 to 160 degrees.The high temps kill all seeds & pathogens in materials.Should be watched & checked over 160 starts killing the good stuff.Just what Ive read,Im no expert on the subject.

I think the ideal temperature range for a hot compost pile is 130-140 degrees. Weed seeds and pathogens will still be killed at those temperatures, they'll just take a little longer. I think its just a matter of whether you want to kill them in 5 hours or 5 minutes, lol. Also at 130-140 you don't lose quite as much nitrogen, and the overall volume of finished compost will be slightly greater. That's what I've read anyways.

Yeah, I'm a real preacher, lol. I am looking for someone that has a pile. 2 things I am running into, people have fresh manure, but I have no place to store it and compost it. Also we have mostly farms around here, very seldom do you see cattle. On top of that we have a huge oil boom going on, so most people have retired and not farming now. Crazy stuff!
