I have always concentrated my watering and fertilizing at the main root of the plant. Should watering and fertilizing also be done at the site of the fruit?

Water the plant and keep the fruit dry! In my opinion

to much water at the base of the plant can and will lead to rotting of the base and sometimes also a foaming base.
id suggest going lean on the water around the base and concentrate on watering/fertalizing the rest of the plant equally. keeping the soil moist but not saturated.
water anytime after dew has dried off in the am ( so you dont spread powdery mildew spores )up until around six pm in the evening ( allowing the leaves to dry off before nightfall)

Dont forget to mist your leaves with COLD water in the middle of the day to keep your leaves from wilting. the leaves are extremely important for creating carbs for your pumpkins.
