Where can a city girl find compost/composted manure? Do I need special connections? Is it a government secret they keep hidden in Area 51? Even Google couldnt help me. Do yall have any suggestions?

Tammy, look in yer local phone book for local dairy farms!!! or a local cattle auction place!!! It took me 3years to find a local dairy farmer willing to put poop aside, and turn it often, but this year...I got 6" of 1yr. old poo.(well composted...smells like dirt) delivered and spread over 8K sq ft. for $100!!! Gold Mind!!! I found mine, by taking very calming Sunday afternoon drives in the country!!! Don't be askaird of asking folks if they have a pile of shi#@$% that you can have!!! LOL Peace, Wayne

Their are alot of people out there that have a couple of horses for pets or for showing. Most of these folks don't have a farm though, just pastures for their horses.
Like Peace Wayne said, do a little driving around and look for a pasture with a few horses and you'll find manure. Because these people don't have a farm, they have nowhere to spread their manure. They will usually have a pile of the real old stuff. That is how I get mine. A good friend has a few horses that his family shows. He has a massive pile, some of which is 15 years old. Most of these people have a tractor with a front loader that will gladly load you for free too. Good luck.

Tammy, you should be able to find a place in Nashville, Im sure there is a riding place nearby. Here in the sticks, most people keep the horses and cattle in fields, so no piles but I kept looking and finially found a place with llamas. I asked everyone and the one that came thru was the one who sold tupperware..go figure.. Found a guy yesterday, $65 for a pickup load of horse manure, this must have been from an expensive horse..lol that was way too much for a load. $20 a pickup should be a good price, of course, free is better. Usually if you do the work. Good luck and Grow Em Big, Stevann

ah ha! so I DO need special connections! I was hoping it was something I could just pick up on the way home. haha

Im in the sticks too about 50 miles east of Nashville in a lil town of about 2,000 only 15,000 in the whole county. I'll ask around and have my husband ask too he knows everybody. He found some chicken litter but it was too green. I was hoping to find some by the weekend, we'll just keep looking.
Thanks for the info :)

See if you can find some Llama or better yet rabbit manure. Both are classified as a cool manure and can be use fresh. Horse, cow etc must first be composted or added in the fall. Also do some research in your area and see if you can find some worm castings. There is a Worms Way Store in Nashville that might know of a local worm farm. No worm farms look for bait distributors. Ask for worm dirt.

Our zoo has a local "Zoo Doo" or "Fecal Fest" every year and gives out tons of composted elephant dung and other animal manures. Might be worth trying as well!

I agree it does look good. I wish I could get some, but they dont allow pick ups and delivery here would be too expensive if they would even come this far.

I may break the bank and go pick up a few bags but the mushroom compost looks like good stuff too and they have a location about 30 miles from me. In the components it says manure, I wonder what kind? Im tempted to give this a try.
Thanks for the link :)
