Alfalfa meal is a good organic source as is bloodmeal. Alfalfa is a good soil conditionor as well. 4th cutting is the best type so I am told. If you want quicker responses in the colder soils, use calcium nitrate, urea or ammonium nitrate. Watch the application rates very closley of the non organics. A little goes a long way. Apply exactly as the product tells you too.

Alfalfa meal is 2.5% N so it would take 40 pounds of alfalfa meal to equal 1 pound of Nitrogen. You will need 40 pounds of Alfalfa meal per 1000 sq. ft.

Blood meal is @ 13.5% N so it would take @ 7.5 pounds of blood meal to equal 1 pound of N or 7.5 pounds per 1000 sq. ft.
